I want to share a text I got from Xavi the morning after Mexico’s loss because it made my day.
Sorry Mikey, I know how much El Tri means to you. Hopefully Mexico can learn from this one. Mediocrity is not the expectation of the fans, nor do they deserve it.
Friends… what’s life without them.
Unfortunately, what it was for Mexico was a shock. A wake-up call, for sure. But it shouldn’t have been surprising. I’d have fired Tata Martino after he lost the first of two finals to the US in one month last year. But the FMF, for once, showed restraint in not giving in to criticism. So, the poor results continued. A poor qualifying campaign. And a poor World Cup. Sadly, I feel that Mexico was largely held back by its coaching and player selection. Tata did not call Santi Giménez or Chicharito Hernandez, declaring that Raúl was good to go, only to bring him on as a substitute in every match. Tata did not call Erick Sánchez or Diego Lainez, two players I felt should have been. And worse, Tata’s tactical approach in both the Poland match and especially the Argentina match were far too conservative. Ultimately, Mexico didn’t capitalize on their chances and by the third match, it was too little too late, bravely as they fought in the last match. There are a million IFs now. But I hope that the FMF learns from its mistakes because we cannot repeat this result in four years.
I’m proud of the players. I always am. My eyes well up for every big match anthem as I imagine myself and my spirit with the players on the field. And as I saw tears in some of their eyes throughout the game’s anthems, I felt that heart to heart connection. Luis Chávez’s goal will soar in my heart for years. I screamed so hard and so loud, my dog was jumping with me. Moments like that that I cherish and remember fondly as the years pass.
I feel your pain.
I feel like the football gods are out to fuck me.
Noppert starting? Did Van Gaal draw straws?
Oh boy… If it’s not an injury it’s another red. Hopefully FM23 is updated. GG James and thanks for simming Zizou.
I just wanted to point out that yellow cards, red cards and injuries in the sim aren’t always completely random. A GM’s instructions will have a lot to do with how often you his teams get them. It’s not just the players or the instructions they have on a given match (the instructions for an anchor man, a ball winner, etc.). It’s also the instructions in the tac on attack and defense. If your instructions are aggressive, you’ll likely see more cards and suspensions. We kind of established the theory a few seasons ago when simmers noticed that the teams that had a slew of these incidents stack up (as you’re seeing now) were also GMs that were using very aggressive tacs/instructions. And that was happening, as a result. Those kind of instructions usually leads to a lot of goals, if you can get them to work for you. And that’s definitely been the case for your two Senior clubs as far as goals scored. But it can also have its drawbacks.
Again, that’s not always the case. Aggressive tacs don’t necessarily always mean more cards and injuries. They’re just more likely. If you notice it becoming a problem, feel free to make an adjustment and despite exceptions, you may see difference in the long run.
On the Spanish broadcast I was watching, it was said that the dozen cameras VAR is using caught Félix Torres’ leg ahead of the last defender’s leg for the split second they’re calling that play. It’s all minutiae that I don’t care for. It took three fucking minutes to settle it. VAR was supposed to turnover egregious errors and now we’re delaying several minutes to measuring legs. What are we doing.
– I think Mexico will regret not taking Chicharito to the WC.
I think Tata will regret not taking Chicharito and Lainez.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m jealous that I never got to experience going to a WC match before the inevitable arm and a leg cost of the modern era, including what I’m sure will be insane prices in 2026.
That Zaire team is legendary for a number of reasons.

Surprising result, this. Newcastle had won 4 straight after some badly needed changes were implemented by Santi after the transfer window. I’ve seemingly been fighting consistency with this team every round. That was something I knew before the transfer window and during, I didn’t make many personnel changes because I just didn’t see many to make that I’d be happier with than the team I have. So, when that’s the case, I find it’s better to just experiment and hope something works.
After I got Tete & Palmer back for LAFC, I went back to my previously successful 4231 formation, one I couldn’t really operate without them. I’d previously used it for this team earlier in the season, as well, to no avail. But I gave it another go after having changed up some players in the starting XI and the result was, a much better result.
It could be an anomaly. I could have just run a lucky sim against a hot team. Barring suspensions, I’ll probably continue with the same lineup next round and we’ll see what comes up. If we can get a run, I still don’t count us out. It could be nothing. It could be something. That’s football manager innit.
