I put money down on Argentina before the start of the tournament. Did I mention that? JR and Xavi know but it was… quite a bit, lol. Seemingly greatly exponentially more in my head after that Saudi match. I’ve lost more in Vegas tbh. But still prob more than I should have. But if they win, I’ll be a genius and drinks are on me, boys.
Did I also mention that I also bet big on Messi winning the Golden Ball?

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Tied for second most goals in a World Cup and middling af for me….
it could be argued that he has a better supporting cast and manager with Argentina than he does with Boca … if you want to get technical.
Also, if you want for the attack to funnel TO the CF, you can certainly augment a tac to do that. A certain someone does this with Romelu Lukaku to a frustrating amount of success if you’re a rival. But generally, most GMs from what I’ve seen don’t necessarily do that and naturally, usually the goals are more of a shared spread. Speaking generally, anyway. Julian can score goals… he did for JR (at least for half a season). But if he ain’t puttin out, change the tacs.
I thought for sure there would be an Argentina-Uruguay final. I thought with France’s injuries to key players, they wouldn’t reach the final but I had them in the Quarters. Not surprising that they are in the Final however. They’ve earned it. Both teams have. May the best team win! Although I think there will be a seismic eruption on the Western hemisphere if Argentina come through. Xavi will probably kick a baby if they don’t.
I find it incredible that Brazil is out. It’s a shock to the rest of the bracket.
Speaking of shocks, it’s been confirmed that famed US Soccer journalist Grant Wahl, who wrote extensively about the myriad of problems that emanated from Qatar hosting the WC, died while covering the Netherlands-Argentina match. He had been detained by stadium security for wearing a rainbow shirt to a game at the start of the tournament. He had been really outspoken about lgbtq rights, probably moreso than any major pundit that I can think of, really. And he’s died. His brother, who is gay, posted to social media, admitting that Grant had worn the rainbow shirt for him. And he believes his brother has been met with foul play. He had admittedly not been feeling well since arriving in Qatar, picking up what he thought was a cold that turned into bronchitis. But he was seen to be an otherwise healthy individual suddenly collapsing in the middle of a match and dying then and there. This is sure to quickly turn into a goddamn scandal considering the circumstances and his frank resistance.

On the real, as a Mexican-American who read Grant’s writing, listened to podcasts and chirped him on Twitter when El Tri/USMNT had games, I found him to be a pretty genuine dude. Even if annoying, I always found him to be real. His death is a huge blow to the entire US Soccer community. RIP.
update: Grant’s wife Dr. Celine Gounder announced he died from an aortic aneurysm. There’s likely nothing anyone could have done.
